EFL Workshop for Young Learners mit Dorothy Sommer Am I repeating myself? Yes! I teach Young Learners! This workshop is designed for teachers experienced in ELT, but with little or no experience of teaching English to young children. We will take a look at some of the advantages of learning a foreign language at a young age as well as some of the theory underpinning teaching young learners, including how to plan a topic-based lesson that is structured and has language learning goals, some guidelines for classroom management and long-term planning, the importance of repetition, rules, responsibility and a solid framework. Be prepared to join in singing and chanting traditional songs and rhymes, playing fun games and doing some activities that are geared towards young learners and timed within a lesson to keep momentum up and acting up down. The target group in this workshop is 3 to 5 year-olds, however, many of the same topics and activities can be used with first and second graders beginning to learn English. Biodata Dorothy Sommer is a freelance teacher for business English and young learners in the Berlin / Brandenburg area. She holds an M.A. in English Language Teaching, a B.A. in Business and German and the RSA Cambridge CELTA. Originally from the United States, she first worked in an international corporation in both the U.S. and Germany before she started her teaching career in Geneva, Switzerland and nearby France, thinking she might have more time for her then two young children. As a long-time member of IATEFL and its special interest groups for business English and young learners, BESIG and YLTSIG, as well as ELTABB, she has been dedicated to the teaching profession since the mid 1990s. Dorothy stepped down from the ELTABB board in March after volunteering as events coordinator for the past three years, responsible for inviting internationally-renowned speakers within the ELT profession to Berlin, organizing numerous workshops and a number of social events. As a former competitive swimmer, she’s looking forward to having more time to spend boating and swimming in nearby lakes this summer.
